Frequently asked questions
How do I upload a file?
Go to your dashboard and click Upload in the sidebar, or drag and drop files anywhere on the Files page — a drop zone will appear. You can also upload entire folders and the directory structure is preserved. Before uploading you can rename files, and duplicate detection will warn you if a file with the same name already exists.
What types of files can I upload?
FileDrop accepts any file type — documents, images, videos, audio, archives, and more. Images, videos (MP4, WebM, MOV, OGG, 3GP), and audio files can be previewed directly in your browser. All other file types can be downloaded.
How do I organise files into folders?
Click "New folder" in the Files page header to create a folder. You can nest folders inside each other. To move a file into a folder, drag it directly onto the folder row, or click the file to open its action panel and use the Move option to navigate your folder tree and pick a destination.
How do I preview a file?
Click on any file in your dashboard to open its action panel, then click Preview. Images open in a lightbox, videos play in a built-in player, and audio files play with a native player. If a file type cannot be previewed, clicking Preview will download it instead.
How do I share a file with someone?
Click on a file to open its action panel, then click Share. Pick how long you want the link to be valid (1 hour to 1 week), optionally set an "Available from" date to schedule when the content unlocks, then click Generate link. Copy the link and send it to anyone — they can open it in their browser without a FileDrop account.
What is a scheduled share link?
When generating a share link, you can set an "Available from" date. The link is created immediately and can be shared right away, but recipients who visit it before the unlock time will see a live countdown (days, hours, minutes, seconds). The moment the timer hits zero, the page reloads automatically and the download and preview buttons appear.
How do I send a file directly to someone's email?
Click on a file to open its action panel, then click Email. Enter the recipient's email address, choose a link expiry, add an optional message, and click Send now. They'll receive a branded email with a download button. You can track delivery, opens, bounces, and complaints in real time from the Emails section of your dashboard.
How do I schedule an email to send later?
In the Email modal, fill in the recipient and other details, then set a date and time in the "Schedule send" field. The button will change to "Schedule" — click it to queue the email. It will appear in the Emails dashboard under "Scheduled" until the time arrives, at which point it is sent automatically. You can cancel a scheduled email at any time before it sends.
How does email status tracking work?
After sending, FileDrop tracks the email through Resend webhooks. The status updates automatically: Sent → Delivered → Opened (when the recipient opens it). If delivery fails you'll see Bounced, Complained, or Delayed. The Emails dashboard refreshes every 15 seconds to show the latest status.
Can other people see my files?
No. Your files are completely private and only visible to you when signed in. The only way someone else can access a file is if you share it via a share link or email — and even then, access is limited to that specific file for the duration you chose.
My share link stopped working. What happened?
Share links expire after the time you set when creating them (1 hour to 1 week). Once expired, the link becomes invalid. To share the file again, go back to your dashboard, click the file, and generate a new share link. You can also see and revoke all active links from the Links section of your dashboard.
The download link in the email I received has expired.
Email download links are valid for the duration the sender chose (1 hour to 1 week). If yours has expired, ask the person who sent it to email the file again — it only takes a few seconds from their dashboard.
How do I delete a file?
Click on any file in your dashboard to open its action panel, then click Delete. You'll be asked to confirm before anything is removed. Deleted files are permanently removed and cannot be recovered — download anything you want to keep first.
I'm getting a "storage limit exceeded" message.
Your account has a storage limit of 2 GB. If you've reached it, delete some files before uploading new ones. Click a file to open its action panel and click Delete. Once you've freed up space, try uploading again.
