Storage

Where are my files stored?+

In your own S3-compatible bucket — any S3-compatible endpoint. FileDrop never stores your files; they stream directly between your bucket and recipients.

How do I connect my own storage?+

Open Settings in your dashboard, scroll to the Storage section, and fill in your S3-compatible bucket details (endpoint, region, bucket name, access key, and secret key). Click 'Test connection' first, then 'Connect storage'. You can also add the CORS rule shown in the instructions so the browser can upload directly.

Plans & billing

Is FileDrop free?+

FileDrop is a paid service — pick a plan on the /pricing page and you are covered for the billing period. Plans are billed in euros and renew automatically. If a renewal does not go through, the organization drops to read-only until it is paid. You always pay your own storage provider separately for storage.

What happens if a payment fails?+

The organization is locked to read-only immediately, with no grace period. Files stay viewable, but uploads, share links, and emails pause until the subscription is renewed. Renewing restores access straight away.

Can I try FileDrop before paying?+

Yes. Contact us and we will set up a free trial for your organization, with a plan and an end date that works for you.

Does deleting an email log refund my quota?+

No. Usage counts every email sent during the billing period, including ones you removed from the history view. Quota only resets when the period rolls over.

Security

How secure are share links?+

Links expire automatically (from 1 hour to 1 week), can be password-protected, lock out brute-force attempts, and can be revoked instantly at any time.

How are my bucket credentials protected?+

They are encrypted at rest with AES-256-GCM. We cannot read your access keys, and neither can anyone else.

Can other people see my files?+

No. Your files are private and only visible to you when signed in. The only way someone else can access a file is if you share it via a link or email — and even then, access is limited to that file for the duration you chose.

Sharing

Can I send files later?+

Yes. Schedule emails to be delivered at any future date and time, or put an unlock date on share links — recipients see a live countdown until the content becomes available.

Do recipients need an account?+

No. Recipients open your link and see a clean download page with instant media previews. If the link is password-protected, they just enter the password you shared.

How do I share a file with someone?+

Click on a file to open its action panel, then click Share. Pick how long you want the link to be valid (1 hour to 1 week), optionally set an 'Available from' date to schedule when the content unlocks, then generate the link and send it to anyone.

What is a scheduled share link?+

A link with an 'Available from' date. It is created immediately and can be shared right away, but recipients who visit before the unlock time see a live countdown. The moment the timer hits zero, the page reloads automatically and the download and preview buttons appear.

My share link stopped working. What happened?+

Share links expire after the time you set when creating them (1 hour to 1 week). Once expired, the link becomes invalid. Generate a new one from the Links section of your dashboard — you can also revoke any active link early.

Email

How do I send a file directly to someone's email?+

Click on a file to open its action panel, then click Email. Enter the recipient's email address, choose a link expiry, add an optional message, and click Send now. Track delivery, opens, bounces, and complaints in real time from the Emails section.

How do I schedule an email to send later?+

In the Email modal, fill in the recipient and details, then set a date and time in the 'Schedule send' field. It appears under Emails > Scheduled until the time arrives, then sends automatically. You can cancel it any time before it sends.

How does email status tracking work?+

After sending, FileDrop tracks the email through delivery webhooks. The status updates automatically: Sent, Delivered, Opened. If delivery fails you will see Bounced, Complained, or Delayed.

The download link in the email I received has expired.+

Email download links are valid for the duration the sender chose (1 hour to 1 week). If yours has expired, ask the person who sent it to email the file again.

Getting started

How do I upload a file?+

Go to your dashboard and click Upload in the sidebar, or drag and drop files anywhere on the Files page — a drop zone will appear. You can also upload entire folders and the directory structure is preserved. Duplicate detection warns you if a file with the same name already exists.

What file types are supported?+

Any file type can be uploaded and shared. Images, videos (MP4, WebM, MOV, OGG, 3GP), and audio get rich in-browser previews, and PDFs can be viewed directly on the download page.

How do I organise files into folders?+

Click 'New folder' in the Files page header. You can nest folders inside each other. To move a file, drag it onto a folder row, or use the Move option in the file's action panel to navigate your folder tree.

How do I preview a file?+

Click any file to open its action panel, then click Preview. Images open in a lightbox, video plays in a built-in player, and audio uses a native player. If a type cannot be previewed, Preview downloads it instead.

How do I delete a file?+

Click on any file to open its action panel, then click Delete. You will be asked to confirm. Deleted files are permanently removed and cannot be recovered — download anything you want to keep first.

Troubleshooting

Uploads fail in my browser.+

Your bucket needs CORS configured so the browser can PUT directly. Settings > Storage shows the exact rule to copy. Downloads and previews use presigned GET URLs and do not need CORS.

The connection test says access denied.+

The access key needs HeadBucket and ListBucket permissions on that bucket. Any S3-compatible provider works as long as those two calls are allowed.

My plan limits all read zero.+

Either the organization has no active subscription yet, or the subscription expired and the org is in read-only mode. Check the Plan card on your dashboard, then renew from the pricing page.
